Across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman, the millennial generation–defined as those born between 1980 and 2000, or 18 to 34 years old–is large, influential and increasingly affluent1. For GCC banks and merchants, there is a real opportunity to identify needs and preferences of millennials and tailor the value proposition for this influential segment. Issuers need to:
- Establish a digital presence
- Move from a product-centric to a customer-centric approach, with a personalized experience
- Ensure multichannel integration and a seamless user experience
- Ensure relevant communications for the target audience
Visa Performance Solutions conducted extensive research with millennials in the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in order to bring these insights to banks and merchants2. Findings:
- Millennials in UAE and KSA make up at least a quarter of the country’s population
- UAE millennials will generate on average $40,000 and KSA an average of $18,000 in annual gross income by 20194
- They spend more than their global peers, based on per trip travel spend
- They are driving the surge in e-commerce spending (which increased by 25 percent in 2015 based on VisaNet data)
The chart below shows the percent of millennials who shop online. In addition, it shows the device used for shopping and the average spend when they shop (based on the last spend).
