Overview
Washington, D.C. is rarely off our TV screens, but the capital of the United States is so much more than world-famous landmarks and presidents. With its open spaces, stunning events, and many neighbourhoods to explore, ‘D.C.’ is the perfect destination for a spring/summer break.
The beginning of spring is heralded by the two-week National Cherry Blossom Festival, a spectacular celebration of the blooming of the city’s Japanese Cherry trees. With an opening ceremony, art exhibitions, cultural performances, fashion shows and much more, this unique spectacle is simply unmissable. Later in the year, the stunning Independence Day fireworks display on the Mall is another once-in-a-lifetime experience that perfectly encapsulates the nation’s pride and flair for extravagance.
This thriving place of course boasts an impressive array of tourist hot-spots such as The White House, the domed US Capitol, Lincoln Memorial and the soaring Washington Monument. However, stray from these sights and you’ll find a city of interesting neighbourhoods, each with its own character and culture. The most celebrated of these is historic Georgetown, with elegant colonial houses, boutiques, and a lively nightlife. Alternatively, try the bohemian district of Adams-Morgan, with its assortment of funky shops and ethnic stores, or the arty suburb of Dupont Circle where you’ll find superb restaurants and art galleries.
This is a trip you won’t forget, even if you don’t bump into Mr Obama.
